Novated leasing in Adelaide
Honest novated leasing for South Australian employees. Real Adelaide stamp duty, rego and FBT figures — and what changed when the SA EV rebate closed. millarX, ACL 569484.
Adelaide drivers got the worst of two policy changes in 2024 — the state's $3,000 EV rebate and three-year rego exemption both closed to new applications. That doesn't mean novated leasing is worse in SA; it just means the state-level sweetener disappeared and the federal FBT exemption is doing most of the heavy lifting now.
The good news for Adelaide employees: South Australia has one of the cleaner stamp duty structures (no cylinder banding, just a value-based slide), public-sector salary packaging is well established through Maxxia and SmartGroup, and SA Power Networks runs a competitive home-charging electricity plan that pairs cheaply with EV leases.
What's different about novated leasing in SA
Stamp duty: SA charges stamp duty on a value-based sliding scale — $1 per $100 under $1,000, rising progressively to $4 per $100 over $3,000 with a luxury surcharge for premium vehicles. The structure is simpler than QLD's cylinder method and lighter than NSW above $45k.
Rego: Standard SA vehicle registration is around $700-$800/year for a passenger vehicle in metro Adelaide.
The SA EV rebate is gone: South Australia's $3,000 rebate and three-year rego exemption for new electric vehicles closed to new applications in mid-2024. For new orders, the federal FBT exemption is doing the work.
Public-sector employers: SA Health, SA Police, Department for Education, Department for Infrastructure and Transport, City of Adelaide, City of Tea Tree Gully, City of Onkaparinga — all have novated leasing pre-approved.
Adelaide novated leasing FAQ
I ordered an EV before the SA rebate closed but it hasn't been delivered yet — am I still eligible?
Possibly — the SA rebate eligibility is generally tied to the order date and the vehicle's first registration date. The cutoff and conditions changed multiple times in 2023-2024, so check directly with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport SA or send us your order documentation and we'll help you confirm.
Can I do a novated lease on a used car in Adelaide?
Yes — novated leasing on used vehicles is allowed for cars typically under 7 years old at the start of the lease. The FBT exemption for EVs only applies to vehicles that were first registered after 1 July 2022.
SA public servant — can I novate two cars?
Yes. There's no rule limiting novated leases to one per person, and we see plenty of dual-car SA Health and SA Police households running two leases through one or both partners' salaries.
Adelaide is small — is there enough EV charging infrastructure?
Yes for daily use, with caveats for road trips. Adelaide metro has ample home-charging and a growing public charger network through Chargefox, Evie and Tesla Supercharger. The Adelaide-Melbourne and Adelaide-Sydney corridors are fully charge-able now.
